COMPLETE HISTORY OF LADY GAGA’S LOVE LIFE.
There’s been more than a little fodder surrounding Lady Gaga’s personal life over the past few years. Between her conspiracy theory-filled 2019 awards season to her Instagram debut with her latest beau, Michael Polansky, the singer walks a fine line between being tight-lipped and remarkably transparent with her fans. As a result, her dating history requires some major decoding. Allow us to break down her past relationships, from her days as Stefani Germanotta to Mother Monster.
2005: Lady Gaga and Lüc Carl start dating
When Lady Gaga was still Stefani Germanotta, she met Lüc Carl when she walked into his New York City bar, St. Jerome’s. The two dated on and off for six years, starting in 2005 when her career as a singer was just taking off.
2008: Lady Gaga is linked to Matthew ‘Dada’ Williams
In 2008, Lady Gaga was briefly linked to Los Angeles designer Matthew Williams (who goes by Dada by the way). Here, he’s seen riding in a car with the singer as she arrives at the 52nd Grammy Awards.
2008: Williams and Lady Gaga call it quits
The couple decided to end their romantic relationship and focus on their business relationship.
“Dada is quite brilliant and we were crazy lovers, but I stopped it when we discovered what a strong creative connection we had,”
Gaga told the Evening Standard in 2010. Williams served as the creative director of Haus of Gaga from 2008 until 2010.
2010: On again with Lüc Carl
Lady Gaga’s ex-boyfriend entered the fold again in 2010.
The singer expressed her feelings in an interview with Rolling Stone, “I’ve really never loved anyone like I loved him. Or like I love him.”
The two parted ways for good in 2011 and Lady Gaga penned “Yoü and I” about their breakup.
July 2011: Lady Gaga meets Taylor Kinney on set
The singer met Taylor Kinney on the set of her music video for “Yoü and I.” Kinney, an up-and-coming actor, was cast as her love interest. “We had a good time. I think there was chemistry. We were shooting until 4 or 5 in the morning or something like that.
We exchanged information. A few weeks went by and we kept in touch, and then that’s that,” Kinney revealed on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
January 2014: The couple goes public
After keeping their relationship mostly under wraps, Lady Gaga and Kinney made a rare appearance together at NBC’s 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards after-party in January 2014.
February 2015: Kinney pops the question
Kinney proposed to Lady Gaga on Valentine’s Day 2015. The actor presented the Queen of Pop with a heart-shaped diamond ring, which he designed with the help of jeweler Lorraine Schwartz.
February 2015: Lady Gaga reveals the ring
Still obviously reeling over her recent engagement, Lady Gaga shared a special detail about her diamond ring on Instagram: “My favorite part of my engagement ring, Taylor and Lorraine designed “T 💗S” in white diamonds on the band. He always called me by my birth name. Since our very first date. I’m such a happy bride-to-be! I can’t stop smiling!!”
December 2015: Attending the Billboard Music Awards
Kinney joined Lady Gaga later that year at the 2015 Billboard Music awards, where Lady Gaga accepted the Woman of the Year Award.
February 2016: Going to the Oscars
The couple arrived at the 88th Annual Academy Awards, where Gaga was nominated for Best Original Song for “Til It Happens to You” for the documentary film The Hunting Grounds.
March 2016: A relationship on the rocks
The couple was all smiles when they made their last public appearance together in March 2016. Lady Gaga’s documentary, Five Foot Two, later revealed that the couple had been fighting in the months leading to their breakup.
July 2016: Lady Gaga announces their breakup
In a split that no one saw coming, Lady Gaga took to Instagram to announce that after five years together, she and Kinney had decided to end their engagement.
Her statement read: “Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples, we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break.
We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared. Please root us on. We’re just like everybody else and we really love each other.”
October 2016: The singer releases ‘Million Reasons‘
A few months later, the singer/songwriter released her fifth studio album, Joanne. One of her new songs was “Million Reasons,” slow, sad ballad fans believe was written about Kinney.
Lady Gaga told E! News, “I would just say that my music on my album as well as all my albums is inspired by my personal life and this one more than others.”
January 2017: Spotted with Christian Carion for the first time
Lady Gaga and her new talent agent beau were first seen together at a Kings of Leon concert in January 2017. He escorted her a month later to Houston, Texas for the Super Bowl ahead of her halftime performance.
October 2017: Engagement rumors swirl
In the fall of 2017, rumors started floating around that Gaga and Carino got engaged over the summer, but the singer didn’t address these reports.
October 2018: Confirmation of their engagement
Lady Gaga’s engagement to Carino went unconfirmed for almost a year until the “Shallow” singer let it slip when she referred to Carino as her “fiancé” at ELLE’s Women in Hollywood gala.
January 6, 2019: Carino and Lady Gaga attend the Golden Globes
As Lady Gaga geared up for an eventful awards season, the nominated actress was accompanied to the Golden Globes by her fiancé.
February 2019: Rumors of a relationship with Bradley Cooper begins.
Throughout awards season, Gaga and Cooper made headlines due to their convincing portrayal as lovers in A Star Is Born.
Rumors of a real-life romance between the co-stars took off on the internet like wildfire—and award show photo ops only fanned the flames.
February 2019: Lady Gaga attends the Oscars solo.
Shortly before the Oscars, news broke that Lady Gaga and Carino had called off their engagement.
It was reported that Lady Gaga initiated the split because Carino was controlling and jealous toward the end of their relationship.
The star walked the Academy Awards red carpet alone and, later in the show, performed “Shallow” onstage with Cooper.
February 2019: The co-stars claim they’re just friends.
With affair rumors still swirling, the newly minted Oscar winner decided to set the record straight.
In an interview with Oprah for ELLE, Lady Gaga explained how she and Cooper were simple acting and that they had carefully staged their Oscars performance.
“For me, as a performer and as an actress, of course, we wanted people to believe that we were in love. And we wanted people to feel that love at the Oscars.
We wanted it to go right through the lens of that camera and to every television that it was being watched on,” she said.
July 2019: Lady Gaga teases a relationship with Dan Horton.
Although the singer never made an official announcement—and was never photographed with him—her Instagram suggested that she began dating sound engineer Dan Horton in July 2019. The singer tagged Horton’s private account in this romantic photo.
October 2019: Single once again.
With as little fanfare as the relationship began, it seemed to have ended. After only a few months of reportedly dating Horton, Lady Gaga referred to herself as “a single lady” in an Instagram Story in October.
December 31, 2019: Photographed with a mystery man.
Lady Gaga sparked interest in her personal life, once again, when she was seen leaving a Las Vegas club on New Year’s Eve with an unidentified man.
January 2020: Making it Instagram official
After being spotted spending time together in Miami, Gaga confirmed her relationship with her new beau, entrepreneur Michael Polansky, on Instagram.

CONTROVERSIES SURROUNDING LADY GAGA
Writhing Half-Naked in Buttercream Icing
Lady Gaga wants to have her cake … and do a lot of other things to it too.
Back in November 2012, the ARTPOPster served up a teaser video for her rap ditty “Cake,” in which she writhed around in a pile of buttercream icing, wearing just underpants, a bra, and sky-high stiletto heels.
The clip, directed by famed photographer Terry Richardson, also showed her flaunting her assets in a G-string. “The real CAKE isn’t HAVING what you want, it’s DOING what you want,” she tweeted.
Giving Birth” on Saturday Night Live
Not exactly a bundle of joy. Toward the end of her performance of “Born This Way” on Saturday Night Live in June 2011, Mother Monster strapped on a fake baby belly and proceeded to “give birth” onstage.
With the help of her many PVC-clad backup dancers, Gaga placed her legs in a pair of gynecological stirrups and let flow a puddle of oozing, gold liquid.
Getting Puked On at SXSW
Talk about an ick factor! While performing on the Doritos #At the 2014 South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, on March 13, Gaga brought up so-called vomit painter Millie Brown to throw up a green liquid all over her body.
The stunt was later criticized by Demi Lovato for “glamorizing” eating disorders, but Gaga stood by it, telling the Today show’s Savannah Guthrie that it represented “art in its purest form.”
Mocking the Catholic Church in “Judas” Video
Wonder how many Hail Marys this is worth. Often accused of imitating her forebear Madonna, Lady Gaga stirred up familiar controversy among religious groups with her shocking video for “Judas,” in which she dresses as a nun and a priest and sucks on rosary beads (among other things).
Fumed Bill Donahue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights: “She has now morphed into a caricature of herself.”
Christina Aguilera feud
Before Gaga was a superstar, gossip blogs wondered if her head-turning looks had been inspiring Christina Aguilera—or if Gaga was borrowing her fashion sense from the pop diva. Both had been sporting a platinum-blonde look with bangs, with more than a few outfits in common.
“I’m not quite sure who this person is, to be honest,” Aguilera said at the time.
The two appeared to squash the beef in 2013, when Gaga called herself a longtime fan and said “I’m so sorry for anything that anyone ever said to her because of my existence” on an episode of Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live.” The two went on to collaborate on a remix of Gaga’s “Do What U Want.”
Super Bowl national anthem
Lady Gaga delivered a universally acclaimed rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner” in 2016, except with one group: gamblers, who had their money on the performance being over or under 2 minutes, 20 seconds.
Thanks to a few extra notes after the song’s final “home of the brave,” it was both: one sportsbook, Bovada, called the song 2 minutes, 9 seconds, but others counted the addendum and timed it at 2:29. Stick to the ponies, folks.
One more feud: Madonna
Was Gaga trying to rip off Madonna with “Born This Way”? Some thought the song borrowed too much from Madonna’s “Express Yourself”—including Madonna.
“The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs,” Madonna told Rolling Stone, via ET. “It’s got nothing to do with ‘she’s taking my crown’ or ‘she’s in some space of mine.’ She has her thing. I do think she’s a very talented singer and songwriter. It was just that one issue.”
As for Gaga, well.
“I wouldn’t make that comparison at all,” Gaga said in 2016. “I don’t mean to disrespect Madonna… she’s a nice lady. And she’s had a fantastic, huge career. She’s the biggest pop star of all time.
But I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours and hours a day in the studio. I’m a producer. I’m a writer. What I do is different.”
Lady Gaga’s meat dress
At the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, American singer Lady Gaga wore a dress made of raw beef, which was commonly referred to by the media as the meat dress.
Designed by Franc Fernandez and styled by Nicola Formichetti, the dress was condemned by animal rights groups, and named by Time magazine as the top fashion statement of 2010.
The press speculated on the originality of the meat dress idea, with comparisons made to similar images found in contemporary art and popular culture.
As with her other dresses, it was archived but went on display in 2011 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after being preserved by taxidermists as a type of jerky.
Gaga explained following the awards ceremony that the dress was a statement about one’s need to fight for what one believes in, and highlighted her distaste for the US military’s don’t-ask-don’t-tell policy.

- Love is like a brick. You can build a house, or you can sink a dead body.
- If you don’t have any shadows you’re not in the light

- Well, that’s your opinion, isn’t it? And I’m not about to waste my time trying to change it.
- I want my fans to love themselves. It’s almost like I want to hypnotize them so when they hear my music they love themselves instantly.
- I am a walking piece of art every day, with my dreams and my ambitions forward at all times in an effort to inspire my fans to lead their life in that way.

- I was performing in New York and my friends started to call me Gaga, they said I was very theatrical and they said, ‘You’re Gaga’.
- What I’ve learned is that you really don’t need to be a celebrity or have money or have the paparazzi following you around to be famous.
- A record deal doesn’t make you an artist; you make yourself an artist.
Lady Gaga is back in New York and serving looks while she’s at it.
Recently, the “Rain on Me” singer wore two different stunning dresses while stepping outside the Plaza Hotel to a crowd of loyal Little Monsters.
Clearly not affected by the East Coast heat wave, Gaga waved to her fans in a sexy, sheer black lace gown from Alexander McQueen’s spring-summer ’21 collection that featured a fitted bodice, an A-line skirt, and a flowing cape.
The singer paired the show-stopping gown with black suede pumps by Jimmy Choo and vintage-inspired cat-eye sunglasses.
